Craig Taborn has been on the New York scene for a while, a prolific performer and side man with many albums under his belt. I’d been looking forward to checking out this new piano duo with west coaster Gust Burns for a while. The music was a surprise: I was expecting something along the spacious lines of Taborn’s solo album on ECM, Avenging Angel.  What I heard started with the zen rock garden aesthetic of Morton Feldman and the music quickly moved somewhere closer to Cecil Taylor. Dense modern classical music but with little reference to the jazz tradition. Two minds seemed to think as one and this music continued, relentlessly, for somewhere between 1 1/2 and 2 hours, with occasional sections of total silence.

I’m looking forward to hearing more from this collaboration, I hope recording is being planned soon.
